 India's successful engineer Mokshgundam Visvesvaraya was born in Chikkaballapur taluka of Kolar district of Mysore (Karnataka). His father's name was Srinivasa Shastri and mother's name was Venkachamma. Father was a Sanskrit scholar.

In recognition of his contribution to the field of engineering, he was awarded 'Bharat Ratna' in 1955.
