Nelson Mandela South African anti-racial revolutionary, political leader, and philanthropist who worked as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. It was the country's first black-headed state and the first fully elected representative democratic elections. His government focused on eliminating the legacy of racism by tackling institutional racism and promoting racial reconciliation. Ideally an African nationalist and socialist, he worked as president of the African National Congress ANC Party from 1991 to 1997.

1.  His work in the quota permanently damaged Mandela's eyes, injuring his tear glands so severely

2.  In 1962 he was arrested and convicted of sabotage and other charges, and sentenced to life in prison.


3.   Before his presidential status, Mandela was an anti-apartheid activist, and the leader of Umkhonto we Sizwe, the armed wing of the African National Congress (ANC).
