Police take gunfire, schools close as standoff drags on in South Jersey



Police took gunfire during a standoff that has been going on all night with a shooting suspect barricaded inside a house in Gloucester Township.

 The siege, which began about 9 p.m. Wednesday in the Brittany Woods section, has prompted officials to close schools in the Gloucester Township and the Black Horse Regional school districts. Police are using Timber Creek High School as a staging area.

 Eighteen neighborhood resident have been evacuated from their homes and other area residents have been asked to shelter in place. No injuries have been reported.

 Details remain sketchy, but the standoff began after police responded to report of gunfire at a home in the Brittany Woods section.

 Officials said the shooter fired on the Gloucester Township Police Department’s armored vehicle with officers inside, striking it several times.

 Police, who are negotiating with the suspect, have not said if anyone else is believed to be inside the house with the shooter.
